LOS ANGELES – Two past members of now-defunct Los Angeles firm Tuttle & Taylor have landed on their feet at the Los Angeles office of Jones Day Reavis & Pogue.
Partners Alan Friedman and Gregory Schetina will move their litigation practice to Jones Day effective Jan. 1. Schetina will join Jones Day as counsel to its business litigation and health care practice groups.
Friedman, who specializes in complex business litigation, said Tuttle & Taylor lawyers have been trying simultaneously to maintain their practices and seek other positions since the firm decided to close in September.
“I’m not sure if there are any lawyers left who have not affiliated with other firms. It was such an extraordinarily talented group of people that frankly they were very quickly gobbled up,” Friedman said, adding that he has had several different offers over the past few months, but “Jones Day made me an offer I couldn’t refuse.”
Jones Day Los Angeles managing partner Frederick McKnight said he was pleased with the firm’s acquisition.
“Alan is one of the outstanding complex business litigators in Los Angeles, with a great reputation, a terrific intellect and tremendous instincts,” McKnight said. “And Greg Schetina is another wonderful addition for us.”
Larry Watanabe of Watanabe & Nason, who recently placed a group of 11 Tuttle & Taylor partners with Luce Forward Hamilton & Scripps, brokered Friedman and Schetina’s move. Cleveland-based Jones Day’s 24 offices in the United States and abroad provide a wider platform for Friedman and Schetina’s practices than single-office Tuttle & Taylor, Watanabe said.
“Alan spent his whole career at Tuttle and never had the ability to practice on a national and international platform,” Watanabe said.
Friedman had been with Tuttle & Taylor for 30 years. Schetina joined the firm in 1984 and rejoined in 1992 after a four-year stint in the office of the U.S. attorney as a special assistant prosecutor.
