THE CALIFORNIA LAW BUSINESS JOURNAL

LOS ANGELES – For the second month in a row, Lyon & Lyon’s San Diego office has lost an intellectual-property attorney to local rival Procopio Cory Hargreaves & Savitch.

Stephen Beuerle will join Procopio Cory Nov. 12 as partner.

Last month, Procopio Cory nabbed partner Troy Schmelzer from Lyon & Lyon, a Los Angeles-based firm with 120 attorneys.

Both attorneys practice patent and trademark prosecution and intellectual-property counseling.

Beuerle, 31, who was an associate at Lyon & Lyon, said 20 clients will follow him to Procopio Cory. He represents biotech, software and electronics companies, including InfoGation Corp., a maker of automobile navigation software, and SeQual Technologies Inc., which makes technology for the medical industry.

He said his book of business is $500,000.

A commitment to growth attracted Beuerle to his new firm, he said.

“It was just a great opportunity to be part of an exciting, dynamic practice over at Procopio,” he said.

Legal recruiter Lawrence Watanabe of Watanabe Nason & Seltzer brokered Beuerle’s move.

The addition of Beuerle and Schmelzer reflects Procopio Cory’s efforts to increase the size of its intellectual-property practice, according to Jacob Reinbolt, who manages the practice group.

The group has 11 attorneys and plans to add another nine by the end of next year, Reinbolt said. Procopio Cory has 70 lawyers total in its sole San Diego office.

Peter Albert, managing partner of Lyon & Lyon’s San Diego office, did not return calls seeking comment.
